One, Two, One, Two.
A multisensory tri-hibition
by Gan Siong King in collaboration with Amanda Gayle & Low Shao-Lyn
Proposed date: 3rd Quarter 2027
.

One, Two, One, Two explores the relationship between language, images, and systems, asking how together they shape the ways we see and understand the world. Bringing together a video essay, a collaged object, and a participatory installation, the tri-hibition traces unexpected connections between moving image, collage, and syntropic agroforestry. As visitors move between the three works, relationships gradually emerge, inviting them to experience meaning not as something fixed or given, but as something continually shaped through perception, participation, and play.

Originally conceived as a video essay about two graphic designers, the project gradually developed into a broader exploration of representation itself. Rather than appearing on screen, Amanda and Shao are represented only through their voices in the film. Their own works occupy adjacent spaces as distinct yet interconnected exhibitions, allowing them to represent themselves on their own terms. Together, the three works reveal parallels between collage, video editing, and syntropic agroforestry, where accumulation, iteration, chance, and seemingly chaotic systems become generative ways of working.

Visitors move between looking, watching, and participating. The film constructs relationships through moving image and sound; Amanda’s accordion book extends her collage practice into a long, immersive object; and Shao’s evolving installation invites audiences to make and contribute directly to a landscape-like structure that grows throughout the exhibition.

One, Two, One, Two proposes that meaning is continually negotiated through language, images, materials, and action. Ultimately, the tri-hibition is an invitation to play with forms and systems, and with the ways we see, make sense of, and represent the world and one another.

One, Two, One, Two is also an experimental essay film that plays with how language, images, and systems shape perception. Through the intersecting voices of two graphic designers. The film follows parallel ways of thinking about ecology, design, image-making, and everyday observation. Although both conversations were recorded separately, they gradually converge, revealing unexpected overlaps between natural systems and creative practice.

Constructed from found footage, archival media, internet videos, editing interfaces, AI-generated imagery, and popular culture, the film continually shifts between representation and process. Words appear as vocabulary, rhythm, grammar, and structure, while images become fragments, records, stages, and systems. Rather than illustrating ideas, the film exposes the operations behind them, allowing voice, text, and image to continually reframe one another.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since 1966, when designers at Letraset and James Mosley, the librarian at St Bride Printing Library in London, took a 1914 Cicero translation and scrambled it to make dummy text for Letraset's Body Type sheets. It has survived not only many decades, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised thanks to these sheets and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker and Microsoft Word including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Low Shao-Lyn

For more than 20 years, Shao-Lyn has been working in the realm of design; translating ideas into visuals through her design practice at Studio ESR, as well as creating green spaces through her environmental design work at Eats, Shoots & Roots; a not-for-profit social enterprise she co-founded in 2012 which aims to reconnect urbanites with nature through growing food.

A few years after completing her MA in Graphic Design from the University of the Creative Arts, UK in 2008, she was  awestruck by how little she knew about cultivating her own food, and set out on a journey to discover more. She has since worked with Eats, Shoots & Roots to build more than 100+ gardens, organize 400+ workshops and distribute 50,000+ products.
